I have chronic fatigue syndrome and I'm concerned about the possibility of spreading XMRV. How is the virus transmitted?
So far, we have research to suggest that XMRV may be transmitted through bodily fluids, or through the air. However, it's too soon to say for sure how the retrovirus spreads.
Also, remember that we don't yet have conclusive evidence that XMRV is linked to chronic fatigue syndrome. Even if it is present in many people with the illness, that doesn't mean it's a cause.
If you do want to take precautions, you can follow the guidelines set for preventing other illnesses, such as frequent hand washing and safe sex. However, these methods have not been investigated for their ability to prevent XMRV transmission.
