Myalgic means muscle pain or tenderness, and encephalomyelitis means inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. It's an alternate name for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in some countries and is widely used in the U.K.
In the U.S., much of the medical community believes there's insufficient evidence behind the name. However, many American CFS advocates, researchers and patients favor the name ME/CFS or CFS/ME because they believe it is more diagnostically accurate and would lend credibility to the condition.
