There are several exciting new treatment options available for people with fibromyalgia (FM). Early studies of three different medications have yielded promising results. Although the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) has not approved any drug specifically for fibromyalgia, a number of medications have received approval for other illnesses and can be prescribed off-label for FM at the discretion of your physician.
Lyrica (pregabalin): In clinical trials of Lyrica for the reduction of fibromyalgia symptoms, patients showed significant improvement in pain, sleep, fatigue and quality of life. Lyrica is a structural derivative of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter. Manufactured by Pfizer, Inc., Lyrica has received FDA approval for the treatment of diabetic neuropathic pain, postherpetic neuralgia and the adjunctive treatment of partial onset seizures in adults with epilepsy.
Cymbalta (duloxetine): Studies of Cymbalta have shown it to be effective for women in significantly reducing fibromyalgia pain and discomfort and improving their overall functioning and quality of life. Men, however, experienced no effect. Cymbalta is a dual-reuptake inhibitor of serotonin and norepinephrine, chemical messengers that are believed to play a role in pain perception and depression. Developed by Eli Lilly & Co., Cymbalta is FDA approved for treating depression and diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Xyrem (sodium oxybate): Clinical trials of Xyrem showed that it significantly improved sleep quality and reduced pain in fibromyalgia patients. Xyrem is a central nervous system depressant and is thought to help the patient attain the deeper stage 3 and stage 4 levels of sleep. Marketed by Orphan Medical, Inc., Xyrem is FDA approved for cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle tone) in patients with narcolepsy. Note: Because of its potential for abuse, Xyrem is a Schedule III federally controlled substance.
