Ultram ER was released in late February 2006 by Ortho-McNeil, Inc., manufacturers of Ultram, and Biovail Corp., innovators of the Smartcoat technology that produces extended-release tablets. Ultram ER comes in once-daily dosages of 100 mg., 200 mg., and 300 mg. tablets.
Tramadol has been available in the U.S. since 1995. This non-scheduled drug is a centrally-acting synthetic opioid analgesic used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. In its original immediate-release form, the usual dosage was one or two 50 mg. tablets to be taken every four to six hours.
The most common side-effects reported during clinical trials of Ultram ER were dizziness, nausea, constipation, drowsiness and flushing. Seizures have been reported in patients taking tramadol, so it is very important that you do not exceed the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
Like other fibromyalgia treatments, Ultram is not for everyone. While many FM patients (including myself) report significant pain relief with Ultram, some say it has no effect on them and others experience negative side effects. Only you and your doctor can decide if Ultram or Ultram ER is right for you.
