XMRV is a retrovirus that controversial research has linked to chronic fatigue syndrome. Researchers are also looking into possible links between XMRV and prostate cancer, as well as other conditions.
XMRV stands for:
- Xenotropic
- Murine leukemia virus
- Related
- Virus
Some researchers believe positive XMRV results in studies were caused by contamination and that XMRV doesn't occur in humans; meanwhile, the researchers behind the original XMRV/chronic fatigue syndrome study stand by their work. If XMRV does occur in people, it would be only the third retrovirus to be discovered in humans.
