Endorphins are hormones in the brain that act as neurotransmitters and serve many important functions.
Endorphins are natural painkillers. They raise the pain threshold and have a neurological effect similar to narcotic painkillers.
They can be released in response to exercise, as in the "runner's high," and also by excitement, love and orgasm.
Endorphins also can make you feel happy or euphoric. Some drugs, both legal and illegal, stimulate endorphin release in your brain. This effect can contribute to the development of addiction.
