Fibromyalgia Basics Series #1
Fibromyalgia is often called a "poorly understood" condition, but we're learning more about it all the time. Doctors now believe fibromyalgia is a neurological condition in which the body "turns up the volume" of pain signals. Nerves become hypersensitive and send excessive pain signals to the brain, which also over reacts. The result is that light pressure can cause searing pain.
Fibromyalgia is not a psychological condition. Sophisticated brain scans show that the pain we feel is very real. Research shows that we have multiple physiological abnormalities spanning the nervous system, endocrine system (hormones) and immune system.
Along with pain, fibromyalgia can cause several dozen symptoms including cognitive problems ("fibro fog"), fatigue, digestive issues and sleep that isn't restful. Symptoms can impact every aspect of our lives, including our relationships.
