Abnormal Hormones in Adolescent Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Research Brief

A recent study out of Norway supports the theory of central nervous system dysregulation in chronic fatigue syndrome with some interesting findings in adolescents.

Researchers found abnormalities in 2 hormonal systems -- one that controls fluid balance in the body, and one that regulates blood volume. Some chronic fatigue syndrome researchers have said for years that low blood volume is a feature of the condition, but the idea has remained controversial.

Other hormones that were tested, including sex hormones and cortisol, were not significantly different between the sick kids and healthy controls.

Evidence like this helps shore up the theory that chronic fatigue syndrome involves central nervous system dysfunction and helps explain why symptoms involve so many different bodily systems.

Interesting – is there a link to the study or your source for this? Would like to read more.

From Adrienne: Ooops! I left the link out. It’s now there, in the first line of the post. ~Adrienne
