XMRV Researchers to Present Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Findings

Wednesday October 28, 2009

The XMRV Discovery Series

Representatives from the Whittemore Peterson Institute (WPI) are presenting their retroviral findings to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Chronic Fatigue Syndrome advisory committee Thursday, Oct. 29.

This comes 3 weeks after the publication of a paper showing researchers had linked the retrovirus, called XMRV, to chronic fatigue syndrome. Dr. Daniel Peterson, an author of the paper and WPI medical director, and WPI founder and president Annette Whittemore both will speak.

"I am hopeful about the possibility of providing patients who are positive for XMRV a definitive diagnosis, and hopefully very soon, a range of effective treatments options," said Dr. Peterson.

Whittemore adds, "We are honored that both Dr. Peterson and I have been given the opportunity to make presentations and participate in this historic committee discussion. The discovery of XMRV is the breakthrough that this institute has been working towards and we have been contacted by patients and physicians from around the world congratulating us and expressing optimistic hope for the future."

The presentation will be at 9 a.m., and you can watch video of it anytime after 10:15 a.m. (EST) at NIH VideoCasting.

On the agenda posted it looks like Dr. Peterson’s talk starts at 10:15. Has it been moved to 9 am?

After 20 years of having the symptoms of fibromyalgia complex including diffuse pain, multiple points of pain, stiffness, difficulty walking long distances, fatigue and on and on, with a slightly low thyroid, but with no one willing to put me on thyroid, I put myself on Synthyroid. After six months, I still felt terrible, had gained more weight and was still fatigued. Then I remembered as an adolescent into early adulthood, I had taken Armour Thyroid because I had a low BMR (Hey, this was the 50’s).

So, I put myself on Armour Thyroid, 1 grain each day to start with. Within 2.5 weeks, the pain and stiffness was gone!! Within a month, the fatigue was gone. It was like a miracle! Nothing else I had tried worked. I had, however continued to work as an advanced practice nurse during all those years and lead an active life. The only thing I gave in to was a handicapped sticker because the pain in my legs prevented me from going very long distances sometimes.

It’s been six years now and I am still pain and stiffness free. I take two grains of thyroid now. I work out twice a week with a trainer doing aerobics and using weights and stretching for 60 minutes. And Oh, I just turned 70, and am very active.

Still have some of the other FM complex symptoms like migraine, IBS, mild depression etc but all very managable.
A physician never helped me with FM. I helped myself and then they continued my medical plan because it worked.

I agree with the previous writer about the Armour Thyroid however my doctor has prescribed Synthroid because the Armour Thyroid is not available.
He claims that they are terribly behind with the production and it may take as much as six months or more to become availalbe. As of now the Synthroid is proving to be useless in helping with any and all of the symptoms and yet doc doesn’t want me to quit. How can we help ourselves to feel better when meds that do help aren’t there for us?
