Research Brief: Jazz Pharmaceuticals is presenting data today (Oct. 20) from its first Phase III study of JZP-6 (sodium oxybate) as a fibromyalgia treatment at the American College of Rheumatolgy's annual meeting in Philadelphia. It also plans to present the information Nov. 2 to the US Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress in Las Vegas.
Sodium oxybate is the active ingredient in the narcolepsy drug Xyrem, which already is a popular off-label treatment for fibromyalgia. Jazz had completed 2 clinical trials and reports positive results from both of them. The company is now working to submit a New Drug Application to the FDA by the end of the year.
Sodium oxybate is not an antidepressant or anti-seizure medication, and it's believed to work differently from other fibromyalgia drugs. However, it does carry a risk of addiction and abuse, so it's not available to everyone.

Isn’t Xyrem the “date rape drug?” If so, a substantial amount of people who have tried it end up with some very unwanted side effects like hallucinations or amnesia the following day to name a few.
Guide Response: Very good question! Xyrem, along with many other drugs, is sometimes misused as a “date rape drug.” However, the side effects associated with this abuse is not associated with a proper dosage of Xyrem. At the same time, it’s always good to be familiar with the worst-case scenario side effects of a drug. Thanks for bringing this up!
