Fibromyalgia Pain Types: The REALLY Odd Ones

By , About.com GuideSeptember 16, 2009

Follow me on:

I've been writing lately about the different types of fibromyalgia pain, because by my count we have at least 7. Still, researchers -- at best -- focus on only 1 or 2. So far, I've covered hyperalgesia, allodynia and painful paresthesia. Those are the medically defined types of pain we get. Here are 3 that I had to invent names for because I couldn't find any that were already in use:

  • Knife in the Voodoo Doll
  • Randomly Roving Pain
  • Sparkler Burns

I'm sure once researchers figure out what's behind these pains they'll have a fancy medical term for them. They could very well be sub-categories of the medically defined pain types as well -- we just don't know yet. And until we know more, all we can do is keep comparing notes until we figure out what helps.

You can read more about those types of pain in 7 Types of Fibromyalgia Pain
. This article's had a great response, so be sure to check out the Readers Respond comments as well.

Although I hurt all over, my worst pain is in my CALVES! This pain is horrible, and I can hardly walk. OTC pain meds don’t really help, and perscription meds make me loopy. If I didn’t have my child to live for, I wouldn’t care to live, honestly.

My pains can range from a dull ache to a bone throbbing pain that feels like it has wraped it’s self around every darn large bone in my body, like a infected tooth or something that is my pain today. The mild pains are adverage but since my pain tollerances are higher than the averege person pain, they have to add 2 to the pain levels and that would be mine. They are usualy in the same places in my body, but now I have to deal with new pains in my legs and feet to be discussed with my PCP more. I take the Hydrocodones 75/750 and just here lately I have to take 2 and go to bed or I get sick.

MY FIBRO HAS KICKED UP ITS UGLY HEELS AND HURTING ME LIKE CRAZY. I CAN ONLY TAKE ULTRAM. AND ONLY IF I’M NOT DRIVING. ULTRAM AND FLEXERIL AT BEDTIME HELP THE KNOTS AT THE BACK OF MY HEAD AND SHOULDERS. THE PAIN EASED FOR A WHILE, BUT IS BACK W/ A VENGENCE. ALL TRIGGER PTS HAVE DIFFERENT PAIN INTENSITIES. MY SHOULDERS AND HIPS ARE ACHING. IT IS HARD TO MOVE. CRAMPS IN FEET AND LEGS ARE NO FUN.

(4) Tom says:

I have extreme intermittent leg and calve pain as described by Sunny. I did not think it was from the “curse”. I thought after 10 years on opiates that I may be experiencing side effects.

I also share Sunny’s feelings about living. My wife is my reason for living apart from dreaming a cure is in the near future. All the advice, websites, the poor response from the CDC and trying many drugs has not worked.

This could only be a combination of the increase in life’s stresses that we have difficulty with and the chemical world we grew up in that has damaged us. we are the Canaries of what is to come.

I try to remain positive and so should all of us. Sorry for the negativity. We must surround ourselves with positiveness including people. My experience has taught me not to divulge too much information to people as their reaction is to run. Researchers are the only hope and pray our condition does not worsen.

My fibro has been affecting me horribly with fatigue lately. It was bad a few weeks ago to the point that it was hard to even go any where because I was about to fall asleep while driving. It calmed but yesterday came again with a vengence. Anyone experience horrible fatigue? I have pain too but the fatigue far surpasses the pain. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I have been really exhausted lately too, although it’s weird, sometimes I am awake and can stay up all night( even when I take my Restoril) !
Other times, I get up, then am ready to go back to bed within an hour or so of being up ! I had some “decent” months from April- Beginning of July,
Now since about July 7th…..I’m just wiped out! Sometimes I don’t leave the house for a week or more! It’s CRAZY !! I’ve been having severe numbness in my arms & legs ALOT recently too. Strange Left butt muscle pain, This morning when I woke up my left arm felt like it had 100 injections, SEVERE PAIN !! Back in Feb/March I was given a B-12 Shot in that arm, It nearly killed me! Not actually killed me( The pain was so bad, I just wished I was dead) It finally let up the end of June. ( Until today….Searing Pain & My pain pills Oxycodone & Methadone DON’T even touch the pain )
My pain always moves, & I can relate to your names you’ve given ” our pain” Adrienne! ALL pain (7) !!
