Post-Swine Flu Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

NEWSBRIEF: The IACFS/ME (International Association for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME) reports that the organization has learned of a documented case of post-H1N1 chronic fatigue syndrome.

"The patient is a 15-year-old male New Zealander who contracted H1N1 on a trip to Mexico and never recovered," says Dr. Ken Friedman, IACFS/ME board member.

Many researchers believe in a genetic predisposition to chronic fatigue syndrome, so those with the condition may want to urge their family members to be vaccinated against the swine flu.

Because the swine flu is hitting younger people harder than most flu strains, it's raising the question of whether the pandemic will create a lot more cases of juvenile chronic fatigue syndrome. Here's one noted blogger's take on the situation:

My son developed CFS as a consequence of the “regular” flu when he was 11.5 (now 16), so I see no reason why H1N1 flu couldn’t trigger it as well.

The substances in the vaccinations themselves have been linked to causing ME/CFS, Gulf War Syndrome, Gullien Bar Syndrome (sp?)and other issues….so personally, I say exactly the opposite – if you want to keep your family safe from winding up as sick as you are, tell them to stay away from the vaccinations.

Mercury, formaldehyde, live virus, animal cancer cells, cells from monkeys that are common known HIV carriers, and squalene are just some of the dangerous substances put into the untested-and-rushed-through-the-approval-process vaccines….much riskier than the flu which is proving to be very mild. And, the vaccines have already been implicated in the deaths of several pregnant women. Many Drs and other medical providers are saying that they will not have the vaccinations themselves. If they, who are most at risk of coming in contact with flu carriers, are avoiding the vaccinations, what does that tell you?

Also, if someone has any complications from the vaccines, there is no recourse whatsoever, as the vaccine makers have been given complete immunity (as long as they had no previous proof that it could cause the problems, and that actually gives them incentive to do even less testing….if they test and find problems, that could come back to bite them, but if they simply fail to test thoroughly and then there are problems, they don’t have to worry about that).

I am just getting over the swine flu. I was sick with a fever for a few days and found the illness itself to be mild. I felt I was recovered and went back to work after 4 days (fever-free for 24 hours). I stayed home the following day due to extreme fatigue and could not even get up to do anything. In the last 2 weeks since I’m functioning at about 50% and have a loss of appetite, loss of energy, and extreme drowsiness. I think it’s going to take me a couple more weeks to get back to normal. I can definitely see how some would get that chronic fatigue. It might be possible to go that way if you don’t get enough rest. I would recommend the shot after going through this. I don’t recommend this illness and while the illness may seem to be mild the recovery is difficult and lengthy. I should mention that I never get sick and rarely catch the flu, exercise regularly, eat right, so on.

I was in bed for 10 days with swine flu, I then slowly recovered, I had antibiotics for chest infection caused by the flu. Its now been 4 weeks since I left my bed. Some days i’m running about 50% then I could sleep all day as I feel so exhursted. I can not concentrate, feel weepy, I work evening 2 nights a week and have to sleep in the day so I have enough energy to work th e3 hour shift. At the end i’m exhursted…Do you think I could have CFS? I also have fibromyalgia.
Caroline.

Guide Response: Those of us with fibromyalgia are especially slow to recover from the flu, and the health people I know who have H1N1 are taking several weeks to feel good again. Don’t worry yet — give your body a couple of months to pull through this.

I first had a sinus infection that felt like it was turning into bronchitis because of my allergies, I live in Michigan and the warm fall we have had made them really bad this year. Then two weeks into that my 9 year old son came down with Influenza A, and they didnt test any further for swine because they said it didnt matter because they treat it all the same, within a couple day of that I became very ill with fever and chills and a super stuffy nose and cough. I have been sick now (2 weeks later) for over 4 weeks, I went to the doctor, was give tama flu and the zpack. I still feel very tired and was blowing and coughing up yellow/green mucus… so I went to the doctors again and now Im on 500mg Amoxicillian 2 pills/twice daily, this is my second day taking it… so Im really hoping that this works, Im getting worried, although other than being tired and stuffy I dont really feel too bad…. I never filled the tama flu, because the doctor didnt think I really had the flu.. now Im wishing I had and still think I might go get it filled??? what to do??

I think you have to way up the side effects. I found the tamiflu made me feel awful, that nausea just was not worth it. Been back to the doctors today they have taken some blood for test. Just got to wait now.

I am in my 6th week of this and a slow recovery. I had the flu, and dr. prescribed Tami, but it was too late. Fevers have dissipated, and now I only have the cough with sore ribs. I am finding Tylenol keeps the rib pain at bay and I have no energy, I worked 12 hours last week and almost passed out. Saw my dr. and said two more weeks. He put me on amoxycillin, nothing. The exhaustion and now lack of appetite is intolerable. Normally I am a high energy person that cannot sit still or stay in bed no matter how ill. This time, wham! this is too long

I have recently been thru the mass Australian swine flu vaccinations. This was done with the two injections two weeks apart. After the first one I had only just started not to feel so tied and my energy levels were just picking up when I had my second one, I was sick with a flu three days later and have been suffering from chronic fatigue ever sick (that was two weeks ago) I have been getting headaches for days and a tiedness I just can’t explain. I am wondering if they is anyone else out there who has experienced this from the (so said) non live virus vaccinations?

(9) Mandy Cobley says:

Having had a good job in health care and a sporty lifestyle, i contracted swine flu most likely from an airport or plane when traveling too and from Tenerife in June 2009
I was given Tamiflu, i was also prsecribed a second course of Tamiflu but i refused to take it as i had read that it hadn’t been fully tested. I also had antibiotics that wouldn’t work, (9 in close succesion), for chest and ear infections. I have not been healthy since and also seem to catch every bug going and at a worse degree than those around me. I have trouble doing even simple chores, constant headaches, no sleep pattern but days when i can’t even get out of bed, have a very short attention span and forget words mid sentance, also i can no longer walk unaided.
I was diagnosed with PVFS at the end of 2009 and then that became documented as CFS about 6 months later.
I have only recently seen a neurologist and was sent for an MRI, also i have developed cysts in the back of both my eyes. I am not getting any better in some ways i am worse but i call that frustration and i also get fed up with meeting people in the medical profession that treat me like an imbecile.
