Another Look at Splitting Pills for Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Friday August 21, 2009

Awhile ago, I wrote a blog exploring the dangers of splitting pills. While it can be dangerous, in some cases it's considered safe and can help you save a lot of money on prescription medications. Below are links to my original post, plus a link to an article by my About.com colleague Nancy Schimelpfening, Guide to Depression, which includes some common fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome medications that can be safely split, and the proper methods for splitting them. At first glance, they may seem to contradict each other, but they actually complement each other well, and I hope you'll read them both.

im on gabapentin for my FMS, lexapro and seroquel.
the seroquel is 100mg and i am supposed to take it ever night, but it is too much for me, im drowsy all the next day, so i split that pill into 4’s and it works perfectly for me. it saves me money as well.

Due to having a high tendency to have severe reaction to drugs my prescriptions are sometimes written 1/2 to 1 tablet on pain meds. If 1/2 tablet does the job than I will take 1/2 in morn and 1/2 at night. I have pilocarpine 1 1/2 tablet three times daily and that is a tiny little pill which makes it fun to use pill splitter on. This is because pharmacy does not carry higher dose so I could use one tablet.

I am perscribed 10mg Ambien for sleep. Most of the time I split my pills in half (5mg) and still recieve good sleep. When I have been under stress or in particularly bad pain, I take the 10 mg.
