Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Getting Test Results From Your Doctor
If you get medical tests done and don't hear anything from you doctor, do you assume your results were normal? A new survey shows, you shouldn't.
Researchers reviewing records of patients with abnormal results in their files found that out of 1,889 cases, 135 people weren't informed. Small practices were best at informing patients of test results, while the largest were worst -- failing to inform 23% of patients about abnormal tests.
So how can you make sure you get your results? The best way is to check back with your doctor after every time you get tests done.
With brain fog, that can be tough, so try to put a system in place to help you. Whether you put your appointments on a calendar, in your phone or on the computer, automatically put a reminder 2 weeks later to check on test results. You can also ask the scheduler at the doctor's office to give you an appointment card with the date your results are expected back.

I try to get a physical copy of all of my test results. Always ask at the lab. Some will fax you a copy if you ask. Otherwise, let the doctor’s office know you want a copy, and if they don’t send you one, then call back to ask.
When I was seeing my doctor monthly (I was part of a clinical trial), it was easy to get my test results. Now that I go less frequently, I have to remember to ask for them. I will usually set a reminder in Outlook or on my cell phone for 2 weeks after my labs to call and ask for a copy of the results. That’s usually enough time for them to get the labs and get them in my file.
I always get copies of the test results from which ever Dr. ordered the tests. I had 2 surgeries last year, and also got copies of ALL things pertaining to my surgeries. It’s a GREAT idea to keep track of ALL of your medical records.
I find that faxing a (signed) request for the test results to be mailed to me takes a lot less energy & eliminates being on hold until someone can help you.
