NEWSBRIEF: If you had your vitamin D levels tested in the last two years, you may want to check on what laboratory did the testing. A major lab -- Quest Diagnostics, Inc. -- says it provided inaccurate results to thousands of people.
Most of the test results showed that levels were higher than they actually were, meaning some people who needed supplements didn't know it. Other results showed lower than actual levels, meaning some people could be taking a dangerous amount of vitamin D.
Research shows that many people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome have low vitamin D levels, and vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate a lot of symptoms.
Quest said it was sending letters to doctors' offices for which it provided testing, so if you've had your vitamin D checked in the past two years, check with your doctor.
