CoQ10 Distribution Altered in Fibromyalgia

Wednesday January 21, 2009

NEWSBRIEF: A new study published in the journal Clinical Biochemistry shows an irregular distribution of the important antioxidant Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in the blood of fibromyalgia (FMS) patients. It was high in some areas and low in others.

Researchers say this finding could help explain muscle abnormalities and mitochondrial dysfunction, including oxidative stress, in people with FMS. They also say this study confirms that oxidative stress plays a role in the condition.

CoQ10 is produced by the body and is critical for cells to function properly. In this study, certain cells involved in immune function were deficient in CoQ10.

Oxidative stress causes cellular damage and death and has been studied in connection with FMS for several years.

Researchers say these latest results show that taking CoQ10 supplements may be beneficial for people with FMS.
