NEWSBRIEF: New research shows a possible cause of sleep disruption in fibromyalgia. Researchers found that the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines tended to be out of balance, with anti-inflammatory cytokines being higher. These cytokines are known to disrupt sleep.
Cytokines are proteins that help regulate your immune response.
Some research already supports pursuing treatments aimed at cytokine regulation for chronic fatigue syndrome, which shares many features with fibromyalgia. It remains to be seen whether cytokine regulation would help people with fibromyalgia get more restful sleep.
