Pregabalin / Lyrica Improves Fibromyalgia Pain Despite Anxiety or Depressive Symptoms

Sunday September 30, 2007
Researchers studied the effect of anxiety and depression on the pain response derived from taking pregabalin (brand name Lyrica). According to an article which appeared online July 26, 2007 in Pain Medicine, there were 529 fibromyalgia patients enrolled in the study. About 71 percent of the study participants reported that they have anxiety symptoms while 56 percent reported depressive symptoms.

Following the analysis of baseline results and scores, researchers concluded that the pain treatment effect of pregabalin did not depend on baseline anxiety or depressive symptoms. Pregabalin improves pain in patients with or without those symptoms. Much of the pain reduction which occurs with pregabalin is independent of any improvements in anxiety or mood symptoms.
