Diet Tips for People With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
There are many diets that claim to benefit people who live with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalopathy (CFS/ME). Although some CFS/ME patients claim to have been helped by a specific diet, there is little scientific evidence backing up their claims. Dietitians associated with the British Dietetic Association (BDA) are concerned that some of the diets are very restrictive and create a lot of extra work for patients and their caregivers, while offering little to no true benefit.
The BDA has posted a fact sheet, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME) & Diet, emphasizing that the body needs a balance of healthy foods to ensure optimum health. It's important to eat a variety of food groups regularly. A nutritionally adequate diet will also help prevent unwanted weight loss or weight gain, a concern of people with CFS/ME who have reduced activity or poor appetite related to their condition. The United States Department of Agriculture also offers tips and resources for eating healthier.
